Lot Essay

Patterns for this form of 'Roman' library chair, with so-called 'shell' back and varied arm-supports, featured in the 1802 London Chair-Makers and Carvers Book of Prices (pl. 1). Another pair of the present pattern, furnished with French squab cushions, was sold Christie's London, 6 October 1994, lot 92.
