Lot Essay

Patterns for this form of 'Roman' library chair, with so-called 'shell' back and varied arm-supports, featured in the 1802 London Chair-Makers and Carvers Book of Prices (pl. 1). Another pair of the present pattern, furnished with French squab cushions, was sold Christie's London, 6 October 1994, lot 92. Similar Grecian black chairs with red leather cushions were noted by Maria Edgeworth at Tullynally Castle, Ireland, as costing 9 guineas each (V. Pakenham, The Big House in Ireland, London, 2003, p.48)
