Lot Essay

Rarely seen on the market, examples of these large band organs are seldom seen as complete as this. It is relatively easy for the movement to be kept separately, or for the casework to be split up. Fortunately, this fine working piece has been in the possesion of the same family for over 80 years and for most of those years, it has taken pride of place in the ballroom of the Hotel Hirschen, situated within the medieval walls of the town of Sursee, Switzerland. Here, it is illustrated in-situ.
The only recent time the organ was moved from this location, was for a recording that Decap Bros. commissioned, so the facade was left standing while the organ was shipped to their premises. Indeed, such is the care of present owners, that the Decap Bros. were commissioned to tune, clean and make any necessary repairs on a regular basis. The wooden facade, although showing some dirt and shrink-cracks to the joints through the repainted white surface, is original.

While it is not practicable to assemble the organ in our saleroom, a banner illustration will be hung and a DVD will also be playing of this lot in operation. Viewing of the dismantled organ in London can be arranged with the department. This lot must be collected within a week of the sale at the purchaser's risk and costs.
