Lot Essay

The backing card is inscribed 'Sussanna Temple Lady Thornhurst Maid of Honor to Ann of Denmark Queen of Ja's 1st'.
The sitter was the only daughter of Sir Alexander Temple of Etchingham, Sussex. Susanna's first husband, Sir Gifford Thornhurst, died in 1627 and in 1636 she married Sir Martin Lister of Thorpe Arnold, Leicestershire.
