Lot Essay

William Birch, the well known High Wycombe furniture manufacturer made a range of furniture retailed by Liberty's including derivatives of George Walton's designs. This settle is similar to an original version of a chair by George Walton, known as an 'Abingwood' armchair used in the billiard room of Mrs Cranston's Buchanan Street Tearooms, Glasgow.
See John Andrews, Arts and Crafts Furniture Woodbridge, 2005, p. 224 and 226 pl. 240 and 244.
