A LARGE WOOD SCULPTURE OF AVALOKITESVARA, MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
the slender graceful Bodhisatva, seated in rajalilasana, with some of the body's weight supported by the stiffly braced left arm and hand placed behind the left leg, and with the wrist of the sectional right arm resting atop the raised knee, wearing a long flowing scarf, dhoti gathered by a sash around the waist and a multi-strand necklace, the face well carved with gentle downcast expression, the hair pulled up in a high chignon with elaborate headdress, traces of coloured pigments -- 62in. (157.5cm.) high.
