A rhinoceros horn libation cup, 17th 18th century
the exterior carved with a scholar carrying a basket suspended from a staff slung over his shoulder engaged in coversation with another, walking up the pine-strewn mountainous slopes towards pavilion retreats, the reverse with a waterfall amidst rocky formations terminating in crested waters flowing to the base with a whirlpool encircled by rocks, both sides flanking waters below the spout, the handle formed of graduating boulders and a carved openwork gnarled tree, all below cloud scrolls on and below the rim, the horn of brownish-honey tone -- 6 3/8in. (16.2cm.) long.
Provenance
From the Collection of Commander William Reginald Priston R.N. b. June 19th 1886. Based in Hong Kong during the 1920's, he built up a large collection of ivory and rhino horn. The included photographs depict the collection in 1922.
His father, Engineer Rear Admiral Robert Browne Priston R.N. b. August 14th 1850, was also based in China during the 1900's and may have passed on the collection to his son.
