The circular plate in an ebonised reeded slip and ropetwist border and dished frame with balls, surmounted by an arched cresting with paterae and centred by a lion's head surmounted by a patera, the apron centred by wings enclosing a reeded ball encircled by a snake, regilt, the apron possibly added, the backboard with paper label printed 'CHARPENTIER PICTURE FRAME MAKER &C. NO. 11 TITCHFIELD STREET CAVENDISH SQUARE'

Lot Essay

Benjamin Charpentier is recorded as a carver, gilder and picture frame maker at various London addresses from 1775-1825. After 1808 he is recorded at 11 Great Titchfield Street (G. Beard & C. Gilbert, eds., Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 160.
