CORFU. A collection of papers relating chiefly to court cases between members of the Quartano family of Corfu, arising from the disputed estate of Delfino Quartano, the volumes apparently assembled c.1758-1765, with some additions up to 1807, a few original documents, the majority transcriptions, comprising depositions, accounts, family trees and other documents, in a number of hands, in Italian and Greek, on paper, approximately 820 pages, folio (some staining, one section of minor rodent damage), in two volumes, contemporary speckled calf, with ties.
The papers are divided into thirteen section relating to a series of court cases, evidently about a disputed inheritance. The great majority concern cases brought by Filippo Quartano: Processi A-E, and K are against Mattio Quartano, F against Attanasio Geracari, G against the three Communi of Garrades, Perlepsimades and St Attanasio, and also Sr Asprea and N.H. Gerolamo Corner, H against Attanasio Salvano; Processo I is marked simply 'Magazzeno'; L comprises observations and remarks on the Filippo/Mattio Quartano cases; M relates to dowries of women in the Quartano family; the concluding section, letter 'N', comprises a compilation of Quartano family wills, up to those of Delfino Quartano and his wife Agustella.
The Quartano were of Venetian origin, but established in Corfu from around 1450. The Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797 put an end to 400 years of Venetian dominance by placing the island under French control. (2)
