EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Albert') to his first wife, Mileva, n.p., n.d., two pages, 8vo.

A RICH LETTER ON THE DESTINIES OF HIS SONS. Einstein is concerned at the danger of his Eduard's [presumably literary] ambitions being too much encouraged -- 'He could lose the contemplative powers without which a deeper development is impossible'. It is important to impress on him that he should concentrate on having a normal career which will give him security in his social position: concentrating solely on a literary career is 'like an animal that only eats lilies'; it might do him good to spend some time with his father, to convince him of this. As for Hans Albert, things go from bad to worse: 'He wrote to me recently a shameless letter under the influence of the female power [his fiancée Frieda Knecht]'; this must be a form of psychological self-defence. The letter concludes with discussion of other family anxieties.
