1970 JAGUAR XKE 2+2 COUPE

From the time the XKE hit the market, Jaguar's impresario Sir William Lyons (knighted, for every good reason, in the 1956 New Years Honours List) had pushed for a longer, wider, more commodious version. His immediate objective was the U.S. market, where he felt the Ford Thunderbird and Buick Riviera four-seaters were encroaching on the XKE's market.
The E-type's initial success put off the 2+2's development for several years and it was finally introduced in 1966. It was based upon a 105" wheelbase, 9" longer than the coupe and roadster. The overall length was similarly larger. The height also increased a little over 2" which allowed a more erect seating position for the driver and front seat. The monocoque body structure in front of the rear axle was changed substantially to make room for the rear seat cushions.
A useful benefit of the 2+2's longer wheelbase was the room it added to the driveline, room that Jaguar utilized to offer an optional Borg-Warner automatic transmission to make the 2+2 even more effective competition with the Thunderbird and Riviera. It is ample tribute to Sir William Lyons' intuition that during the six years from 1966-1971 that it was in production alongside the Fixed Head Coupe and Open Two Seater the 2+2 sold 8,829 units, outselling the 7,518 units of the Fixed Head Coupe and accounting for some 62 of the OTS's 14,172 units. The 1970 Jaguar XKE Series II 2+2 Coupe offered here was last road-registered in 1978, three decades ago. It is equipped with the desirable synchromesh 4-speed manual gearbox and is largely complete and sound although for obvious reasons in need of a complete restoration. Powered by Jaguar's smooth, powerful and reliable 4.2 liter dual overhead camshaft six-cylinder engine, it will make a highly desirable car for shows, tours and open road events, with room for children, luggage, golf clubs or very supple adults in the back.
One of Jaguar's most commercially successful models, this 1970 XKE Series II 2+2 Coupe will be a rewarding project with satisfying results that continue well beyond the completion date of its restoration.
