THE INVENTOR OF THE TELEGRAPH. The white-bearded Morse gazes directly into the camera. An accomplished painter turned inventor, Morse successfully tested the first electro-magnetic telegraphic apparatus in 1844, but spent years defending his patent. Interestingly, Morse was an early advocate of dauguerreotype photography and is reputed to have taught the processs to Mathew B. Brady himself.
