Lot Essay

Claude T. Stanfield Moore was born in Nottingham but spent a considerable amount of time in London painting scenes of the Thames. He finally moved to London in 1882.

The present picture depicts the Houses of Parliament, a subject Moore would return to time and again during his career. Moore has depicted Parliament from the southern aspect at sunset, when the silhouette of the architecture produces a decorative effect against the darkening sky.
