THE PRESENT PICTURE ALMOST CERTAINLY DEPICTS JOHN LINNELL'S LODGINGS AT COLLINS FARM, NORTH END IN HAMPSTEAD, WHERE THE FAMILY TEMPORARILY RESIDED IN THE SUMMER OF 1823. IN MARCH 1824, LINNELL MOVED HIS WIFE AND FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN PERMANENTLY TO COLLINS FARM, ALTHOUGH HE RETAINED HIS CITY ABODE AT CIRENCESTER PLACE AS A STUDIO IN WHICH HE COULD WORK UNDISTURBED.
A SIMLIAR VIEW OF COLLINS FARM HAD BEEN PAINTED BY LINNELL IN 1827, ENTITLED EVENING, VICINITY OF A FARM (SEE SOTHEBY'S, 11 JULY 1990, LOT 91). DAVID LINNELL DESCRIBES THE SCENE IN HIS BOOK ON THE ARTIST AND IMAGINES 'BLAKE WALKING UP THAT SAME PATH TO SEE THE LINNELLS ON ONE OF HIS SUNDAY VISITS'. (D. LINNELL, BLAKE, PALMER, LINNELL AND CO., THE BOOK GUILD, 1994, P. 107). LINNELL OFTEN PAINTED VARIATIONS ON THE SAME SCENE AND IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE SENT THE PRESENT WORK TO THE BRITISH INSTITUTION WHILST EXHIBITING EVENING, VICINITY OF A FARM AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY.
