Lot Essay

Aleksandra Levchenko appears to have been the model for Somov's depiction of the character of Cecile de Volange from Choderlos de Laclos's Liaisons dangereuses. Somov executed a series of illustrations to accompany the publication in 1934, see L. Korotkina, Konstantin Andreevich Somov, St. Petersburg, 2004, no. 122.
