Lot Essay

On February 11th 1909, the Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna was made Chief of the 3rd Novorossiiski dragoon regiment. Colonel Prince Belosselski-Belozerski, commander of the regiment, commissioned the full regimental uniform for her. At this time the uniforms of the Russian army were being redesigned. The design of the regiment's uniform was already agreed upon, however the shako of the general officers had not yet been approved. Given the situation, the commander of the regiment went ahead and ordered a full uniform for the Grand Duchess including the present shako. Emperor Nicholas II subsequently ruled out the shako for general officers and replaced it with a leather helmet. Nevertheless, the Grand Duchess kept her shako amongst her personal belongings until her death in 1937.
