Marked Fabergé with the Imperial warrant, workmaster's mark of Julius Rappoport, St. Petersburg, circa 1890, with scratched inventory number 3588, with later French control mark
Humorously modelled, the seated frog on his hind legs, holding his head up, with his mouth open, holding his left fore-leg on his chest, detachable head, one eye set with cabochon garnet (one missing), marked under base

Lot Essay

Fabergé created many utility pieces in silver of animal form. The present model was probably designed as a match holder, with the serrated mouth opening as a striker. For an example of a frog forming a cigarette-lighter see Christie's, Geneva, 12 May 1981, lot 94.
