An impressive panel, showing Christ seated in an upright position on his Mother's left arm, her pointing to him, whilst turning her gaze away, above Christ and God the Father crowning the Mother of God, finely painted, the faces in soft, earthen tones, the garments' folds highlighted in gold, the haloes and hems elaborately decorated in relief with simulated jewels, against light blue background

Lot Essay

The lower part of the icon is inscribed with the kontakion of the Akathistos Hymn: Unto you, O Theotokos, invincible Champion, your City, in thanksgiving ascribes the victory for the deliverance from sufferings. And having your might unassailable, free us from all dangers, so that we may cry unto you: Rejoice, O Bride Ever-Virgin!
