THE MOTHER OF GOD 'HOPE AND SHELTER OF THE CHRISTIANS'
MELCHITE, EARLY 18TH CENTURY
The large panel showing the elegant figure of the Mother of God enthroned, with Christ on her lap, wearing deep red and green garments, embellished with three stars, embroidered hems and golden folds, Christ wearing the vestments of the high Priest, with his legs crossed, blessing and holding a closed scroll, flanked by the half-figures of two angels, each holding a scroll inscribed with a verse from the Akathistos Hymn, the bejewelled throne meticulously rendered, against a blue and gold background, at the bottom signed: By the hand of Silvestros, with the mercy of God, the Patriarch of Antioch, 1727.

This lot, together with the following lot, were purchased by the present owner from the dealer, Nicolas C. Vafopoulos, on 29 September 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon.
