WINSTANLEY, Hamlet (engraver). [A Collection of 20 engraved plates of Pictures in the Collection of the Earl of Derby, London: Hamlet Winstanley, 1728-29]. 2° (541 x 404mm). Engraved dedication and 20 plates by Winstanley after works by or attributed to Rembrandt, Ribera, Rosa, Tintoretto, Titian, Van Dyck and others, 4 double-page (lacks title and portrait, a few plates with mainly marginal staining and spotting). Contemporary half calf with marbled boards (rather worn, lower board detached, upper board detaching). A remarkable collection of plates depicting some of the recent acquisitions by artist-agent Hamlet Winstanley on behalf of his patron James Stanley, 10th Earl of Derby (1664-ca.1736). The project of the engravings was conceived on his return from Rome, where the original pictures were purchased, in 1725.
