Lot Essay

The Queen Elisabeth Music Competition is one of the world's most prestigious and rigorous and is named in honour of Elisabeth, Queen of the Belgians. It is devoted to violin, piano, composition and singing. First conducted in 1937 and dedicated to the memory of Eugène Ysaÿe, the Belgian concert-violinist, it was won by the great Russian violinist David Oistrakh. In 1938 the competition was dedicated to piano and was won by the Russian Emile Guilels.

Like her mother, Maria-José, Queen of Italy, established the Queen Maria-José International Musical Competiton Prize. It is a bi-annual contest held in Switzerland since 2000.
