Lot Essay

This violin is decorated after the manner of Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737). Twelve instruments by him with this high level of decoration are extant. The painted decoration applied to the sides and scroll of this violin are specifically based upon those on the Spanish Court viola made in 1696 as part of an intended gift from Stradivari to King Philip V of Spain
