Globular, nielloed with battle scenes and inscriptions relating to the Battle of Palestro, 30-31 May 1859, and the capture of San Martino during the Battle of Solferino, 24 June 1859, opening to reveal a hinged column, capped with an enamelled flag, the links of the chain formed as alternating cannon and piles of cannon balls, with a gilt metal watch key

Lot Essay

The Battles of Palestro and Solferino were decisive engagements during the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859. The Franco-Sardinian alliance led by Vittorio Emanuele II and Napoleon III defeated Emperor Franz-Josef of Austria and was a crucial step in the Italian Risorgimento.
