Lot Essay

A similar jar of this eight-lobed melon form decorated in blue and white only is illustrated by J. Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, where the author mentions that three smaller jars of this shape with similar decoration were recovered from the Hatcher shipwreck, dating to about 1643, and illustrated by C. Sheaf and R. Kilburn in The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes - The Complete Record, Oxford, 1988, p. 59, pl. 79 (top row).
Compare also the current lot with an iron-red-ground blue and white melon-form jar sold in our New York Rooms, 22 March 2007, lot 314.
