Lot Essay

The lotus scroll was a popular and versatile motif in Chinese enamel history. The design of the lotus evolved and developed through the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the floral form that is seen on the present vase is characteristic of the design found on 16th/17th century cloisonné enamel pieces, such as the large yuhuchunping vase from the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in The National Palace Museum, Taipei 1971, pl.10.
