HOUSTON, Sam (1793-1863). Autograph letter signed ("Sam Houston,") as President of Texas, to General Thomas Jefferson Green (1801-1863) in Velasco; Columbia, Texas, 1 January 1837. 1 full page, 4to, integral address leaf addressed by Houston, reecipient's docket. In very fine condition.
"I HAVE HAD NO REST SINCE WE PARTED..." Ten months after the fall of the Alamo, and nine months after Houston's victory over Santa Anna at San Jacinto, the President of Texas writes in an urgent tone to General Green. He underlines the importance of certain letters being forwarded and the urgent need for military assistance and new volunteers to protect the tenuous independence of Texas. "It is 4 o clock in the morning," Houston writes, "and I have had no rest since we parted. The letters to General Hamilton I send by Genl Hunt. Give the letters to Genl Hamilton all speed. If he should, come urge him to speedy action, and may God speed you. Send troops and supplies. Yours truly...."
