As early as in the 1950s, Affandi had given up using brush and applied paint directly onto the canvas out of the tube. With this free and spontaneous style that the artist explored his won emotions and those of his subjects. The strength of Affandi's fluid style lies in his ability to maintain a coherent structure of his subjects amidst the disarray of lines and colours. Details were meticulously kept, attesting much to the keen observation and to some extent the sense of humour of the artist.
A very interesting detail of the present work is the placement of the little animals such as the dogs on the lower section of the work. Instead of showing the perspective of the work, the animals or even the traditional Balinese boats are disproportionately small in comparing to the main subject - the fisherman, thereby creating a queer sense of notion, rendering the work a lesser 'complete' composition but more of an impromptu assemblage of subjects put together by a naove and spontaneous person. This child-like manner of the works corresponds well with the expressionistic spirit of the artist which are further enhanced by the bold outlining of the objects in the composition and the sporadic placement of paint.
