This work will be included in the forthcoming Robert Motherwell catalogue raisonné of paintings and collages being prepared by the Dedalus Foundation.

This work is part of the artist's Great Wall of China series, of which there are only five paintings, all of which are in private hands. The U-shaped forms in this series of paintings is closely related to the paintings in Motherwell's Open series of which there are hundreds of paintings and drawings.
