Lot Essay

This drawing is not associated with any known paintings by Piola. However, similar frieze-like compositions of half-length figures are common in his oeuvre, notably Laban with Rachel and Jacob, now in a private collection (D. Sanguinetti, Domenico Piola e i pittori della sua 'casa', Soncino, 2004, II, p. 422, no. I.130).
