Lot Essay

The present work was executed when John was finally sent to France as a war-artist in 1917. He had applied for a commission early in 1916 but had to wait over a year until Lord Beaverbrook gazetted him with the Canadians. John was stationed at the Corps Headquarters, in Arras. His oil, Fraternity, executed during his time in France, is in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, London.
