Lot Essay

Carmen Gandarillas was part of a bohemian and well-connected European set and as such was a friend to many English and French artists of the 1920s and 1930s. Her brother was the Chilean playboy, Tony Gandarillas, whose relationship with Christopher Wood introducted the young painter to fashionable life and, in particular, opium. Carmen's aunt, Madame Errazuriz of Biarritz was a friend of both Stravinksy and Picasso.

John met Carmen at her brother Tony's house in Cheyne Walk, London, where John was a frequent visitor. He also painted her circa 1920, dressed in Spanish costume. This painting is in the collection of the Sheffield Art Gallery.
