Lot Essay

During December 1912 Gaudier was taken by a friend to the London Wrestling Club where he was entranced by the physical agility and speed of the wrestlers. A number of male nude studies, some preparatory for his modelled figure, The Wrestler (December 1912 - February 1913), were produced around this period. This drawing is unusual in showing several apparently different models on a single sheet. Several of the models here recur in other drawings but the poses, especially of the two figures on the left, suggest archery or winding a cross bow.
