Mick Sider lived with David Hockney in the late 1960s.
The present work is an excellent example of the figure drawings of youths Hockney made in the early 1960s, at a time when he was exploring his own sexuality. His models for these homoerotic drawings were often friends and lovers, but he also used photographs from American gay magazines. In the summer of 1961, Hockney had travelled to New York for the first time, selling some of his paintings to pay for the trip. It was from his New York sketchbooks that Hockney came up with the idea of an updated version of Hogarth's Rake's Progress, which was executed during the same period as the present work.
