Lot Essay

Hockney met Mo McDermott while studying at the Royal College of Art in 1961. McDermott quickly became Hockney's model and latterly his assistant. The present work is arguably from 1973 when Hockney and Henry Geldzahler (1935-1994), who oversaw the creation of the Department of Twentieth Century Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, went to Italy in the summer of 1973. The pair rented a villa near Lucca and travelled around Northern Italy. Many friends visited them there including Mo McDermott who posed for this work.
