Lot Essay

Thomas Heaphy exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1797. Following the success of a portrait of the Russian Ambassador he was appointed portrait painter to the Prince of Wales. His work was admired by Lawrence and, in 1824, he became the first President of the Society of British Artists.
