Lot Essay
This chest belongs to a group of chests which appear to be panelled in the normal manner, but in fact are solid boarded chests onto which the mouldings are simply pegged to the surface to give the appearance of framed and panelled construction. They all have imbricated carving on the vertical uprights (in this example also on the top and lower cross rails) as well as large stylised flowers carved to the fronts and distinctive spandrels to the feet. Other detail varies.
