One carved with The Mercer's Company emblem of a Maiden, the arms of the City of Chichester, the Grocer's Company and Tudor roses, the other with a Merchants's mark and Holy initials, the I of I.H.S. carved as a ewer

Lot Essay

The Mercer's emblem of the bust of a maiden here doubles as the symbol of the Virgin as the figure is holding flowers emblematic of the Virgin. The Catholic imagery of the panels including the five mysteries of the Rosary would suggest a date prior to Edward VI of England.
