A Japanese Hirado-style blue and white double-gourd waterdropper, 19th century
supported on the the lower gourd with the bulbous upper gourd forming the spout, the neck applied with a double tasseled cord trailing along the sides, with entwined leafy grapevine applied to the sides, the oval cover surmounted by a reclining horse finial with its head turned towards its left flank, with a twisted rope loop handle -- 5 15/16in. (15.1cm.) wide.

Lot Essay

A horse coming out of a double gourd relates to the Daoist immortal Zhang Guo (Japanese: Chokaro). According to legend when the immortal would rest from riding his magic white mule, he would place it within the gourd until it was required again, at which time he would sprinkle the shrivelled form with spirit water.
