On a production of his play Der Schwierige, directed by Max Reinhardt at the Josephstädtischen Theater, expressing his alarm at the recipient's late arrival for rehearsals, particularly in view of the difficulty in mastering an Austrian accent, and suggesting she might resolve the problem by adopting a slight Hungarian accent, in the fashionable style: 'so bestürzt ich über die Complication war, die Ihr spätes Herkommen zu den Proben des "Schwierigen" verschuldete, so tröstet mich Reinhardt immer wieder dass Sie mit der vollkommen fertig gelernten Rolle erscheinen werden ...

Hofmannsthal and Max Reinhardt were amongst the re-founders of the Salzburg Festival in 1920.
