PLATEN, August, Graf von (1796-1835). Autograph letter signed ('Platen') to Professor Gerhard, Naples, 27 January 1831, referring to a friend who is 'the most wretched correspondent imaginable', noting that Ranke too writes infrequently, though overwork is his excuse, and reminding Gerhard of two bundles of books he has left in Rome -- the first an unbound set of the works of Goethe, which he asks him to send on, one page, 4to, integral address panel, remnant of seal (seal tear, touching text, repaired).

Platen first visited Italy in 1826, and made it thereafter his home, living the life of a peripatetic poet between Rome, Naples and Florence.
