Tolstoy wonders how his cousin Alexandrine is coping with her health problems, and enquires affectionately after Sophie, longing to see her again. After giving news of his children, Tolstoy recounts that he has been occupied with writing about his relgious beliefs; a work which he feels obliged to produce, but when finished, he would like to return to literary undertakings which he has been intending to pursue for a long time.
