VALÉRY, Paul (1871-1945). Autograph manuscript, 'Eté--Final', a working draft of three additional stanzas for a new edition of an early work, n. p., n. d. [1941-1942?], comprising 12 lines of verse with corrections, emendations and variants, 1 page, small oblong 4to.
'Sur la pente de sable où s'abandonne l'onde
Où la puissance en pleurs brise tous ses diamants
Repose dans l'oubli des merveilles du monde
Vierge sourde aux clameurs d'eternels éléments
Fille exposée aux dieux [...]
Ame close au tumulte et seule avec la nuit
Le mystere éclatant du soleil dans sa force
Ne peut rien contre l'ombre où ton regard le fuit
Vainement tourne aux cieux l'astre père des choses ... '
The earliest version of Eté comprising five stanzas was published in the review Le Centaure in 1896, and reissued, with minor variants and a dedication to the American-born French symbolist poet Francis Vielé-Griffin, in 1900, and in the collection entitled Album des Vers Anciens in 1920. The present manuscript with variants in almost every line represents an intermediate stage of the composition of the final and very different version of the poem, published in 1942, which included six new stanzas placed between the first three and last two of the original version (Oeuvres complètes ed. J. Hytier, vol. I (1962), pages 85-86 and 1568-1570)
