VOLTAIRE, François Marie Arouet de (1694-1778). Autograph letter signed ('V') to 'Walters' (i.e. Georg Conrad Walther), n.p. [Berlin], 4 September n.y. [1751], 1½ pages, 4to, integral address panel (to Walther, 'Libraire du Roy Dresde')
To his printer concerning the new edition of his works on which he is working, commenting on the type size, the author's portrait and other matters: 'Vous aurez le troisieme volume necessaire Jy travaille sans relache. '
Walther came to Dresden from Nuremberg in 1736 and joined the purveyor of books for the royal library, before becoming the court printer to Augustus III. He was, at his own request, recommended to Voltaire by Count Algarotti who wrote of him, 'nella sua professione va dietro all'onore' (Besterman D. 3483), and Voltaire quickly agreed to Walther's proposal for the printing of a new edition of his works - there were in fact two editions, in 1748 and, the subject of the present letter, in 1752. The letter (D.4565) is one of a series by Voltaire to Walther from 1746 to 1756, when his relationship with the Cramers in Geneva began.
