BERG, Alban (1885-1935). Autograph letter signed ('Alban Berg') to Ludwig Karpath, [postmarked Vienna, 21 September 1911], asking Karpath to communicate his thanks on behalf of all the students to two benefactors to a fund to provide financial relief for Arnold Schoenberg, promising that their anonymity will be retained, and referring to the broader appeal, with its aim to provide some more long-term support, 3 pages, 8vo.

In 1911 Berg had just completed his six years' studies under Schoenberg, but the closeness of their relations is demonstrated by the fact that, unknown to Schonberg, he organised the appeal referred to here in order to relieve his teacher's financial circumstances at the end of his teaching post at the Royal Academy of Music in Vienna. In fact, Berg's efforts proved redundant, as Schoenberg moved to Berlin shortly afterwards, and his fortunes began to improve.
