Affectionate letters from Bernhardt to her former governess, the first declaring how much she is missed and lightly reproaching her for not visiting them, and continuing with news of her theatrical progress, 'Je pense dire Jeanne d'Arc et Hortense de "l'Ecole des Vieillards" ... Je suis engageée au Vaudeville comme première et avec de bons appointements'; the second letter, on receiving one from Mlle de Brabender ('Votre lettre m'a donné un grand battement de coeur de joie') invites her to lunch. Brabender writes on learning that Bernhardt is about to travel [to Australia]. Bernhardt wrote of Mlle de Brabender's arrival in her family in her memoirs (Ma double Vie), 'une vielle demoiselle, aux yeux gris pleins de douceur, vint prendre possession de ma vie ... ', Rachel dashes off a light-hearted note to an admirer, 'Voilà nos deux stalles mon aimable pacha ... venez meler vos applaudissements à ceux des nombreux romains que j'aurai éparpillés dans la salle demain soir.'
