WORKING LIKE A 'CHEVAL D'OMNIBUS': a high-spirited letter full of musical gossip. Debussy is most apologetic for not having written, but his excuse is his compositional labours: 'j'ai tellement manié de doubles croches ces temps ci que la force me manquait pour dire les quelques anecdotes adéquates a ces mêmes doubles croches; j'ai donc travaillé comme un cheval d'omnibus'. He is very pleased with the Bizet score enclosed by Louys ('une de ses meilleures choses: c'etait le Maupassant de la musique'), going on to an extravagant sortie on the bad habits of opera, always making characters die on the same cadences: 'on a pas assez remarqué combien il y avait peu d'accords dans un siecle! ainsi combien depuis gluck a t'on fait mourir de gens sur l'accord de sixte et maintenant de Manon a Isolde on meurt sur l'accord de 7eme diminuée! et si l'on savait la chose idiote qu'on appelle, accord parfait, qui n'est qu'une habitude, comme d'aller au café!'. Paris is a delight at present, with lots of 'petites idées folles' promenading freely and temptingly, and only Louÿs's presence is lacking.
