Bonivard succeeded his uncle in 1510 as Prior of the Cluniac priory of St-Victor in Geneva, but resisted the Duke of Savoy's exercise of his rights over the city and was imprisoned several times, from 1530-36 at Chillon. On his release he became a protestant, and obtained a pension from the city.
