Charles writes to the governess in the court of the queen mother in Vienna about her former charge, his sister Maria Anna Josepha, who had married King John V of Portugal in 1708. Charles has heard that she has suffered a miscarriage and has written to her words of encouragement as a true brother: 'Von der Königin in Portugall höre laider widter verhoffen daß sie einige verlust hat undt hab als ein treyer bruder undt der Sie gewis von herzon lib hat ihr geschriben undt gerathen was vor ihren dienst an besten gefundten', and referring to her sisters, the Archduchesses Maria Elisabeth and Magdalena Josepha.

Maria Anna first child, Princess Barbara, was born in December 1711, followed in October 1712 by the short-lived Prince Peter.
