MONTECUCCOLI ON CROMWELL: Montecuccoli comments on a variety of foreign affairs matters, including the treatment of the Polish ambassador in Constantinople, discussing Cromwell's assumption of an unspecified title (presumably that of Lord Protector, which he had assumed on 16 December 1653: 'Non mi pare, che in questo il Cromvel habbia torto, di ripigliar à se quel nome, ch'è proprio, e naturale à i Capitani Generali delle Armate, e di ritornarlo alla sua originale significazione'), quoting Machiavelli, and in a postscript referring to hopes of a Genoese army.

After repeatedly distinguishing himself during the Thirty Years' War, Montecuccoli was in the early 1650s chiefly concerned with matters of the Council of War, although he also served as an Imperial representative on missions to Flanders, England and Sweden. (2)
