ZIONISTS -- HERZL, Theodor (1860-1904). Autograph letter signed ('Th. Herzl') to an unidentified friend, Morschach (Switzerland), 29 June 1893, giving news of a holiday whose pleasures have been curtailed by his wife's illness (a throat infection) -- 'Die Kinder werden separirt u. ich sitze da u. pinsle ... Aber die Luft is wie man sagt balsamisch', 2 pages, 8vo, bifolium; [with] an autograph letter signed by Max NORDAU (1849-1923) to the writer Sarah Hutzler, Paris, 18 April 1882, a love letter, 'Sie sind süß und gefährlich, Deine Briefe. Man gewöhnt sich an sie wie an Absinth oder Chloral', 4 pages, small 8vo, bifolium; [and] an autograph letter signed by Chaim Azriel WEIZMANN.
Herzl at this stage was working as a journalist, based in Vienna: his awakening to the Zionist cause was to come two years later, when he was in Paris covering the Dreyfus trial, where he met and began the collaboration with Nordau which was to lead to the founding of the World Zionist Congress.
