KANT, Immanuel (1724-1804). Autograph letter signed ('I. Kant') to the writer Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel, n.p. [Königsberg], 24 October 1791, 2/3 page, folio, on a bifolium, integral address panel, WITH A FINE IMPRESSION OF KANT'S ARMORIAL SEAL ON RED WAX (light spotting, some minor flaking at margins).
Kant encloses for von Hippel's amusement a letter (no longer present), apparently by the Prussian statesman Georg Heinrich Ludwig Nicolovius, 'er enthält auch keine Heimlichkeit; indessen kan er Sie doch einige Augenblicke amusiren'. Kant has been invited to lunch by the court chaplain and mathematician Johann Schultz, whose wife has asked Kant, in a curiously roundabout way, to invite von Hippel to the same meal: 'Zugleich aber hat die Frau Hofpredigerin mich ersucht Sie durch meinen Lampe zu eben derselben Malzeit inständigst zu invitiren. Warum durch diesen Umschweif weiß ich nicht. Indessen wünsche ich sehr daß Sie durch diesen meinen Boten zusagen möchten um die Ehre zu haben Ihrer Gesellschaft zu genießen'. Kant's servant Martin Lampe was evidently to deliver the letter by hand.
Published in the Akademie Ausgabe, 11, no.461 (from a copy). A fellow native of Königsberg, Theodor von Hippel's satirical writings were much influenced by Laurence Sterne, and were in turn to influence Jean Paul; he was among Kant's closest social circle.
